Steve Griffin has been an independent insurance agent since 1985. Raised in Durham as the youngest child of nine, Steve learned the value of hard work and serving others early in his career. Steve is a 1982 graduate of UNCW where he spent his college years building a social fraternity along with serving in a leadership position for UNCW’s Student Government Association (SGA).

Since moving back to Durham, Steve has been tremendously involved in his community through serving on boards and committees of local organizations and nonprofits. Serving on the Board of Directors since the late 1980’s, Steve has been an active member of the Homebuilder’s Association of Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties (HBA DOC).
Steve currently serves on the Independent Insurance Agents of NC (IIANC) Governmental Affairs Committee and the Friends of Durham Steering Committee. He is the past founding Board member of the Lincoln Community Health Center Foundation, past Durham Jaycees Board member, and past Reality Ministries Board member. Steve is also a past Vice Chair and Board member of the Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network Board (known today as Families Moving Forward), which serves homeless families and underprivileged children. Steve served on the Board of Trustees for the North Carolina School of Science & Mathematics from 2013 – 2021.

One of Steve’s passion is to support school choice throughout the country; he believes that every parent and child should be able to choose the school that best fits their family’s values. Steve recently helped create the Education Freedom PAC to better support the school choice movement across the state. Steve currently serves as Vice Chair of the North Carolina Education and Workforce Innovation Commission, which grants over $2 million per year to fund innovative vocational programs. In 1996, Steve was involved with the statewide movement to bring charter schools to North Carolina. Today, Insurance People is one of the largest writers of charter schools in the Southeast.

Steve’s hobbies include golf, tennis, pickle ball, reading, bible study, wearing Lilly Pulitzer and being a man of colorful outfits to brighten everyone’s day. He has many blessings in his life, including his wife of over 30 years, Margaret, and being able to work with his daughters, Hadley and Becca, as well as the best insurance family that only God could assemble.
